Brig.-Gen. Daniel Ménard, the former commander of Canada's war effort in Afghanistan, and his subordinate, Master Cpl. Bianka Langlois, have been charged by military police after admitting to a sexual affair while on duty.

New Canadian commander arrives in Kandahar

Canada's new military commander in Afghanistan arrived in Kandahar, a week after his predecessor was relieved of command following allegations he was involved in an inappropriate personal relationship while in theatre. Brigadier-General Jon Vance will lead Canada's 2,800 military personnel in the country until the fall.

Canadian commander in Afghanistan relieved of duty

Brigadier-General Daniel Ménard, the top Canadian soldier in Afghanistan, has been relieved of his duties. Allegations had surfaced that Menard was involved in an inappropriate personal relationship. The decision to dismiss Menard was made by the Commander of Canada's Expeditionary Forces, Lieutenant-General Marc Lessard. BGen Jon Vance will assume command of Canadian forces in Afghanistan pending the arrival of the next commander, BGen Dean Milner, in September.

Brig.-Gen Daniel Ménard, Commander Joint Task Force Kandahar, has been fined $3500 for accidentally firing his rifle (twice) at Kandahar airbase – a mishap that took place in front of the Chief of the Defence Staff, General Walt Natynczyk.

Brig.-Gen. Daniel Menard, the commander of Canadian Forces in Afghanistan, was fined $3,500 after pleading guilty at a court martial Tuesday to neglect in handling his C8 rifle.
