  MGen (ret) CLIVE ADDY: National Security Affairs caddy@frontline-canada.com

Clive Addy served for 35 years in the Canadian Forces. Among his many posts, he was Commander of the Cdn Brigade in Germany, the Deputy Chief of Staff (Ops) at Central Army Group in Heidelberg, Chief of Staff of Mobile Command, and Commander of Land Forces in Western Canada. Retiring in 1996, he helped draft an audit of Emergency Preparedness for the Province of British Columbia. He then became the National Executive Secretary of the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires – the largest security guard provider in Canada. He is the past National Vice Chair of the CDA, and the past National Chair of the Federation of Military and United Services Institutes of Canada. He is the founding Chair of the National Security Group which has been following and monitoring Canadian Security policy since 2003.

  Capt(N) PETER AVIS: Security & Intelligence
Peter Avis graduated from RMC in 1979 and served in a number of frigates and destroyers during his naval career. He was later appointed Executive Officer of the elite Sea Training Unit in Halifax, and finally was Commanding Officer of HMCS FREDERICTON. In recent years, he has served as the Operations Officer for the Chief of the Maritime Staff during Operation APOLLO, achieved his Masters degree at the Norman Paterson School of Int'l Affairs at Carleton University, served as senior policy advisor for Transportation and Emergency Management in the Security and Intelligence Secretariat in the Privy Council Office, and authored a book (Comparing National Security Approaches to Maritime Security in the Post-9/11 Era). Currently, he is Director General Requirements on the new Strategic Joint Staff at NDHQ.
  JACQUES BRUNELLE: Aviation & Policing Writer jbrunelle@frontline-canada.com
A 16-year veteran of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Jacques Brunelle is currently an investigator with their National Security Investigation Section in Ottawa. His first book on the RCMP, The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in the 1990s: Their Uniforms and Kit was well received and a second edition is currently in the works. He has written numerous articles for Blue Line, Pony Express and Information magazines dealing with police matters and police aviation in particular. Originally from Lachine, Quebec, Jacques attended Dawson College and Concordia University in Montreal. He was selected to be a pallbearer for both Canada's Unknown Soldier and the following year for the former Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau.
 
  RICHARD COHEN: Security and Technology
Richard Cohen is president of RSC Strategic Connections, based in Ottawa. He has special expertise in counter-terrorism and national security policy development. Over the years, he has advised many of the new European democracies on the development of national security and defence strategies. He is helping to establish a Strategic Research Institute for the Serbia and Montenegro Ministry of Defence. He advises on public safety technology market development and is active in public-private sector national security collaboration for the Conference Board of Canada. He has lectured widely and has published numerous articles on national and international security issues.

After a 35 year military career that culminated in leading a NATO strategic military intelligence staff in Mons, Belgium from 1998-2001, Brigadier General (ret) Jim Cox has since pursued advanced national security and defence intelligence studies at the Royal Military College of Canada, where he is currently a PhD candidate in War Studies. Prior to becoming associated with FrontLine magazines, he was the Executive Secretary of the Canadian Association for Security and Intelligence Studies (CASIS).

Dr. Duane Cronin is an Assistant Professor at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He specializes in Impact Biomechanics with interests in numerical modeling and high rate characterization of materials to understand trauma to the human body and develop Personal Protective Equipment. Dr Cronin was also part of the NATO Task Group TG-024: Test Methodologies for Personal Protective Equipment Against Anti-Personnel Mine Blast. More information can be found at his website:

Dr Richard Gimblett is an independent historian and defence policy analyst with previous experience in the Canadian Navy. He served at sea in the Persian Gulf in 1991 and subsequently co-authored the official Canadian account of that conflict. Later, he helped to develop Leadmark: The Navy's Strategy for 2020. He is a respected naval historian, and has contributed analyses for the Conference of Defence Associations and the Council for Canadian Security in the 21st Century (CCS21). He is a Research Fellow with the Centre for Foreign Policy Studies at Dalhousie University, and is Vice-President of the Cdn Nautical Research Society.
  MIKE GREENLEY: Simulation Systems
Mike is the President of CAE Professional Services, with offices in Canada (Greenley & Associates Inc.), the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia. Mike's service career over the past 15 years has focused on the development of user centred, simulation based analysis, design, testing, and training, and on the definition of integrated professional services that exhibit these principles in support of systems and capability engineering. Mike received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the University of Waterloo, is a Project Management Professional, and a member of a number of human factors and modeling & simulation societies. Peter is a Senior IT Security Consultant with CGI's Information Systems and Management Consultants in Ottawa, Canada. A 20-year career of Security and Intelligence roles with the Canadian Armed Forces culminated with strategist and management roles within the DND Computer Incident Response Team. Currently assigned as the Business Growth Lead for CGI's Managed Security Services, which include a myriad of traditional Managed Security Service offerings, he is responsible for the strategic directions of CGI's Security service, Business Development, and partner relations. A Certified Information Systems Professional, Peter is also the founder and past President of the Ottawa Chapter of the High Technology Crime Investigation Association.
 
  Sgt UDAY JASWAL: Police Officer
Sergeant Jaswal joined the Ottawa Police Emergency Services Unit in 1999. He is a qualified Search Master under both the NASAR and ERI search systems and has substantial experience in conducting ground searches for missing persons and evidence searches related to criminal investigations. He is the Search and Rescue program coordinator for the Emergency Services Unit and the Chairperson of the Dementia Assistance Committee. Sgt. Uday Jaswal also has extensive experience training police and other professionals in Search and Rescue planning and response.

Warren King joined Australia's Defence Materiel Organisation in 2004 as Program Manager of the Air Warfare Destroyer Program. Warren has a strong international defence business background with over 35 years experience including military and industrial employment in Australia, the US and the UK, and over 12 years with combat system projects. He has held a number of senior positions within the Australian operations of a major multinational defence company including Program Manager for the Replacement Combat System for the Collins Class submarines. His most recent position before joining the DMO was as the General Manager of Above Water Warfare for the company.

The son of a naval commander and the grandson of an army major general, Tim Page 's career has been within the business sector. He is currently President of CADSI, the Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries. Through this position, Mr. Page is lobbying for greater recognition and support for the role played by Canadian industry in support of Canada’s national security objectives. An experienced public policy, communications and association professional, previously involved with industry groups such as the Cdn Chamber of Commerce and the Assn of Consulting Engineers of Canada, his interests have been to promote Canada as a globally competitive economy and as a contributor to international development.

Jay Rosenblatt, a Partner in the law firm Simpson Wigle LLP, located in Hamilton, Ontario, is engaged in a Business and Technology law practice.   JENI SANDEMAN: RCMP
Jeni Sandeman is a senior communication strategist in the RCMP's Public Affairs and Communication Services Directorate with over 5 years of service as an RCMP Civilian Member. Jeni has over 9 years of experience in the communication field and holds two degrees (Mount Royal College and University of Calgary). Jeni is currently an acting team leader within the Strategic Communication group, providing consultation, issues management and communication support to the Critical Incident Preparedness and Response Initiative, the Protective Policing Directorate, and the Major Events Section for security related to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
 
  Maj RODGER B. SLOAN: Defence Research
Joining the CF as a Medical Assistant, Major Sloan completed numerous postings and tours. He was later commissioned as a Bioscience officer, and was instrumental in setting up the new CF School of Survival and Aeromedical Training. He participated in various UNSCOM missions in Iraq (1995, 1998) as a Biological weapons inspector, and was one of the first leaders of Force Health Protection’s Deployable Health Hazard Assessment teams. In 2003, Maj Sloan was posted to DRDC Suffield as the first Director of the Counter Terrorism Technology Centre. This centre, with a staff of over 30 civilian CBRN experts, is responsible for providing Training, Test and Evaluation, and Forensic support to both domestic and international CBRN First Responders and the military community.

Dr. Harold Stocker has been a Defence Scientist with the Directorate of Science and Technology Policy (DST Pol), Defence R&D Canada (DRDC) Programs since 2001. In his 25-year career, following two post-doctoral assignments, one of which was with the National Research Council of Canada, he held progressively senior management positions with the Atomic Energy Control Board (now, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission), and the nuclear regulatory authority in Canada. Although trained as a nuclear physicist, his interest and attention with DRDC are devoted to the study, analysis and assessment of emerging technologies in the defence and national security domains.
  Prof JOE VARNER: Security Advisor
Professor Varner has certificates in Emergency Program Management, Hazardous Materials, and Disaster Recovery from the Federal Emergency Management Institute in Maryland and Certificate in Security Supervision from the International Foundation of Protection Officers. An editor and author, he has written over 40 articles on defence and security issues. Joe Varner is a Fellow of the Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society and is currently serving as Senior Advisor on national security matters to the Deputy Chairman of The Senate Standing Committee on National Security and Defence and the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate of Canada.
